Eleven individuals, primarily students, were injured Tuesday morning following a shooting outside the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in Manisa, western Turkey. Two of the victims are currently reported to be in critical condition as medical teams and local authorities manage the aftermath of the attack. A 15-year-old male suspect was quickly apprehended by police and is currently in custody, though his specific motive for the shooting remains unclear at this stage of the investigation.
Preliminary investigations suggest the weapon used in the attack was family-owned. In addition to the teenager, Turkish authorities have detained several members of his family, including his parents and his grandfather, who reportedly owned the firearm. Security footage from the scene reportedly shows the suspect preparing for the assault shortly before the first shots were fired. Under Turkish law, the minor must appear before a court for a formal hearing before any official arrest or long-term detention can be finalized.
This incident marks the third school shooting in Turkey this year, a trend that has prompted significant national concern regarding rising violence and the accessibility of firearms. The Turkish Education Ministry expressed deep sorrow over the event and immediately dispatched a team of national investigators to the scene to review school security protocols. In the wake of this tragedy, the government has signaled its intention to implement significantly tighter gun control measures and enhanced security frameworks for the upcoming academic year to prevent further occurrences of school-based violence.
