The journey to the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) has intensified as several prominent schools from the Central and Ashanti regions secured their spots in the national championship following a series of high-stakes regional qualifiers. Edinaman Senior High School emerged as a major force in the Central Region, recording the highest opening score of 71 points to dominate their contest against Mando SHS, Nyankumase SHS, and Eguafo Abrem SHS. The qualifiers have showcased a mix of dominant victories, dramatic tie-breakers, and emotional personal stories, highlighting the academic vigor present in Ghana's educational landscape under the current administration of President John Mahama. In the Central Region, Edinaman's record-setting performance was mirrored by Boa Amponsem Senior High Technical School, which delivered a decisive 62-point victory in Contest Five. Based in Dunkwa-on-Offin, Boa Amponsem maintained impressive speed and accuracy to defeat Oguaa SHTS and Obiri Yeboah SHS. Meanwhile, the Elmina-based Holy Child School, affectionately known as 'Holico,' secured a hard-fought return to the national stage after a two-year absence. Holy Child's progression was particularly dramatic, requiring a tie-breaker to overcome Mankessim SHTS after both schools finished the final round in a deadlock. Other successful qualifiers from the region include Aggrey Memorial A.M.E. Zion SHS, which defeated Gomoa SDA SHS with 51 points, and Nyakrom SHTS. Nyakrom's second-ever qualification was highlighted by the performance of twin sisters Bridgitta and Bridget Agyabeng, whose collaboration and support became a standout moment of the regional tour. The Ashanti Region also witnessed stellar performances, most notably from Kumasi Academy (KUMACA). The school booked its national slot with a commanding 63 points, leaving Ejisu SHTS and Fomena T.I. Ahmadiyya SHS trailing significantly behind. KUMACA's excellence was further cemented by a perfect score in the GOIL PLC Riddle Bonanza, earning them a GH¢800 cash prize for their precision. In another Ashanti contest, St. Hubert’s Seminary Senior High School staged an impressive comeback. Despite a slow start trailing Afua Kobi Ampem Girls’ SHS, St. Hubert’s rallied in the later rounds to finish with 56 points, securing their place among the top competitors for the 2026 championship. As the regional qualifiers continue across the country, these victories underscore the rising academic standards and the intense preparation schools are investing in science and mathematics. The successful schools now join a growing roster of national contenders, including Mfantsiman Girls' and defending champions Keta Senior High School. For many institutions, these qualifiers represent not just a quest for a trophy, but a testament to perseverance and institutional pride. The upcoming 2026 NSMQ Championship promises to be a landmark event in Ghana's educational calendar, celebrating the intellectual prowess of the nation's youth as they vie for the ultimate prize in science and mathematics excellence.
