Staff of the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd (ECG) have launched protests against the government's proposed privatization of the company's operations. The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU-TUC) has raised red flags in all operational offices, expressing strong opposition to the government's intention to appoint a transaction adviser for the transition to Private Sector Participation (PSP).
This protest comes on the heels of PUWU-TUC's ongoing collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and ECG management on a turnaround program, which has reportedly achieved a 90% improvement in revenue and ensured a stable power supply. General Secretary Timothy Nyame highlighted the success of these internal reforms, arguing that they can effectively revive ECG without resorting to privatization. PUWU-TUC is calling on the government to halt any moves toward privatization to allow for the continuation of these positive turnaround efforts.
