Daniel Kwaku Merk, the Country Director of Zipline Ghana, has issued a strong call for the government and private sector to prioritize the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at the JoyNews Digital Economy Forum, Merk warned that the country cannot afford to miss the current wave of AI advancements, as doing so could lead to significant long-term economic repercussions. He framed the rapid evolution of technology as a critical opportunity for the nation to unlock new growth sectors and address deep-seated local challenges through innovation.
Merk emphasized that while technological disruption is often viewed with apprehension as a threat to traditional industries, it should instead be seen as a catalyst for unforeseen possibilities. According to the Zipline director, the transformative nature of AI requires a shift in mindset, moving from passive observation to active engagement and experimentation. He argued that technological progress often yields results that are difficult to predict at the outset but ultimately provide a foundation for modern economic development and improved service delivery across various sectors.
To effectively harness the power of AI, Merk stressed the necessity of substantial investment in digital infrastructure and the development of specialized technical skills among the workforce. He pointed to Zipline’s own operations—utilizing autonomous drones for life-saving medical deliveries—as a successful practical example of how technology can be adapted to solve specific logistical and healthcare needs in Ghana. By embracing these tools today, Merk suggested that Ghana can convert theoretical potential into tangible economic benefits, ensuring the country remains competitive in an increasingly automated global digital economy.
