Customs officials at the Tema Port have successfully intercepted a significant cache of weaponry, including an assault rifle, two pistols, and 610 rounds of ammunition. The illegal consignment, which originated from the United States, was discovered during a routine inspection at the Golden Jubilee Terminal on September 25, 2026. This interception underscores the ongoing efforts by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to bolster national security and curb the influx of illicit arms through the country's major maritime gateways.
The firearms and ammunition were found concealed within a shipment of personal effects, a tactic often used to evade detection. However, vigilant officers flagged the consignment during a detailed physical examination. Because the items were not declared and fall under the category of restricted goods, they were immediately seized. Following standard security protocols, the GRA has since transferred the weaponry to the Ghana Police Service for further forensic analysis and investigation into the intended recipients.
Reacting to the development, Florence Asante, the Deputy Commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority, stressed the imperative of strict adherence to Ghana’s import regulations. She noted that while individuals are permitted to ship personal items, certain goods require specific licenses and permits from the relevant state agencies before they can be brought into the country. Ms. Asante emphasized the importance of compliance, warning that the GRA will continue to apply the law rigorously to prevent the entry of unauthorized materials.
The Deputy Commissioner further cautioned importers to accurately declare every item in their consignments to avoid severe legal consequences. She specifically addressed common excuses used by smugglers, noting that claiming ignorance of the contents of one's cargo is not a valid legal defense under Ghanaian law. The incident reflects a broader trend of increased enforcement at Ghana's borders as security agencies work to prevent the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, ensuring public safety and national stability.
