
Scientists at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Water Research Institute (CSIR-WRI) have issued a stark warning regarding the deteriorating state of Ghana's water resources, revealing that over 60% of the nation’s water bodies are now polluted. Speaking at the institute’s 2026 Mid-Year Review in Accra, experts highlighted that the rampant spread of illegal mining, or galamsey, has introduced hazardous heavy metals into the water supply. This environmental crisis poses a direct threat to public health and food security, prompting urgent calls for an integrated 'Water-Environment-Food-Health Nexus' approach to build national resilience against these growing risks.
Dr. Franklin Obiri-Nyarko, a lead researcher at CSIR-WRI, emphasized that the contamination of these vital resources requires immediate, science-based restoration efforts. The pollution is not limited to small streams but has significantly impacted major systems like the Volta River. According to research presented by Mrs. Zita Abuntori, the presence of heavy metals in these waters threatens communities dependent on them for domestic use and agriculture. To combat this, Dr. Obiri-Nyarko introduced a five-pronged strategy aimed at tackling pollution at its source and enhancing water treatment protocols to protect the population from chronic health complications associated with toxic metal exposure.
In response to these challenges, the CSIR-WRI is promoting innovative technologies to safeguard food production and optimize water use. One such solution is an integrated aquaculture-agriculture system that repurposes nutrient-rich wastewater from fish farming to irrigate crops. Dr. Seth Agyakwah noted that successful trials have already produced high-quality yields of crops like cucumbers. This system serves a dual purpose: it mitigates the environmental impact of fish farm effluent and provides a safer alternative to using contaminated river water for irrigation, which experts warn can carry significant pathogens and chemical risks to consumers.
Despite these scientific advancements, experts stress that technology alone cannot solve the crisis without robust institutional coordination and financial support. Dr. Sylvester Afram Boadi and Dr. Prosper Bazaanah have called for better alignment between the ministries responsible for water, energy, and food planning. They argue that protecting Ghana’s water bodies requires the provision of genuine alternative livelihoods for those currently involved in illegal mining. As the CSIR-WRI marks its 30th anniversary, the institute maintains that dedicated funding for research and the commercialization of sustainable technologies are essential to securing the health and water security of all Ghanaians.
