Journalists and media practitioners across Ghana have commenced a specialized training program designed to enhance the reporting of cybercrime and online threats. Launched on August 3, 2026, at the National Communications Authority (NCA) Tower in Accra, the initiative is part of the National Community Media Cyber Capability Building Project (NCMCCBP). This collaborative effort involves the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), the Africa Centre for Digital Transformation (ACDT), and the government of the Czech Republic, aiming to bolster public awareness and improve the technical quality of cybersecurity coverage in the media.
The training program involves over 60 media organizations in its first phase, with the initial sessions taking place in Accra throughout August before expanding to Kumasi in September. The curriculum is comprehensive, covering cybersecurity fundamentals, digital forensics, and media ethics. It is specifically designed to equip journalists with the tools necessary to report responsibly on complex issues such as online fraud, misinformation, and digital safety. To ensure the training translates into practical skills, participants are required to complete practical assignments to earn certification.
During the launch, Deputy Minister Mohammed Adams Sukparu emphasized the growing urgency of this initiative, noting that cybercrime increasingly targets all segments of society, including high-ranking government officials. CSA Director Divine Selase Agbeti echoed these concerns, highlighting that the media serves as a critical bridge in educating the public about evolving digital threats. By empowering journalists with technical knowledge, the project seeks to create a more resilient digital environment for all Ghanaians.
Successful participants of the training will be inducted into the newly formed Cyber Security Press Corps. This specialized group will serve as a national network of media experts dedicated to cybersecurity issues, fostering closer collaboration between media houses and national security agencies. As Ghana continues its digital transformation, this project represents a strategic move to ensure that the Fourth Estate is adequately prepared to navigate and report on the complexities of the digital age.
