Professor Christian Agyare has been formally inducted as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), marking a historic new chapter for the institution. The investiture, held in Kumasi, was presided over by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who serves as the university's Chancellor. The high-profile event was also attended by the Chief of Staff, Dr. Julius Debrah, representing the government, alongside prominent academic and political figures. Professor Agyare succeeds Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, taking the helm at a time when the university is poised to deepen its impact on Ghana’s scientific and technological landscape.
During the ceremony, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II issued a poignant charge to the new Vice-Chancellor, urging him to adopt a leadership style rooted in humility, transparency, and dialogue rather than mere command. The Chancellor emphasized that the role is a responsibility to be stewarded with fairness and respect for all stakeholders. By encouraging a culture of consultation, Otumfuo noted that internal differences should be managed constructively to enhance public confidence in the university. He reminded Professor Agyare that his primary mandate remains the advancement of teaching, learning, and research, calling on him to empower his colleagues and turn institutional challenges into growth opportunities.
Reinforcing the university’s role in national progress, Chief of Staff Dr. Julius Debrah highlighted the critical need for stronger ties between academia and the state. He urged the university leadership to foster an environment of entrepreneurship that equips graduates to create jobs, aligning with the national focus on economic transformation and global competitiveness. Dr. Debrah noted that for the nation's economic growth to be meaningful, it must translate into tangible benefits for the youth through innovation in science and technology—areas where KNUST is uniquely positioned to lead.
Professor Agyare brings more than two decades of academic experience to the office, having previously served as Provost and established himself as a distinguished scholar in pharmaceutical microbiology. His career is marked by extensive research, numerous publications, and significant funding acquisitions, which he plans to leverage to elevate KNUST’s global standing. In his inaugural address, the new Vice-Chancellor committed to a vision centered on research excellence, innovation, and strategic collaboration, promising to lead the university toward becoming a premier hub for science and technology in Africa.
