Border police in the Bulgarian city of Burgas have successfully intercepted a group of 32 illegal migrants and their driver at the Poda checkpoint. The operation, which took place on June 14, comes as regional authorities ramp up surveillance in response to shifting migration patterns. All individuals involved were immediately taken into custody by law enforcement officers as part of the country's ongoing efforts to manage unauthorized entries and secure international borders.
Upon apprehension, it was discovered that the migrants were in poor physical condition, suffering significantly from dehydration likely caused by the conditions of their travel. Despite their weakened state, medical personnel who conducted on-site examinations determined that none of the individuals required emergency hospitalization. The driver of the vehicle is also being held as investigations continue into the logistics of the transport and the network responsible for the movement of the group.
Border Police Director Anton Zlatanov addressed the incident, noting that such developments are not unexpected given the current seasonal trends. Zlatanov highlighted that Bulgarian authorities are anticipating a marked increase in migratory pressure throughout the summer months. This anticipated surge necessitates heightened vigilance at key transit points like Burgas to ensure border security and provide humanitarian oversight for those attempting these perilous journeys.
