The tragedy occurred following a league fixture against FC Samartex. While the Berekum Chelsea team bus was returning to Berekum, it was ambushed by armed men who opened fire on the vehicle. During the chaotic encounter, which forced players and officials to flee for their lives, Frimpong was shot in the head. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival. Several of his teammates also sustained injuries during the attack and were hospitalized, highlighting the sheer brutality of the ambush.
