Alban Bagbin urges independence for parliamentary legal counsels

Alban Bagbin directs Parliament to reconvene on November 3

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has officially directed lawmakers to return for the Third Meeting of the Second Session of the Ninth Parliament on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. This summons, issued in accordance with parliamentary guidelines, marks the beginning of a crucial period dedicated to legislative oversight and financial review. The announcement follows a period of recess during which members were away from the House following an active second meeting. The official notice for the reconvening was formally communicated on October 20, 2026, with the Speaker exercising his authority under Order 58 of the Standing Orders of Parliament. This procedural step ensures that the legislative body can address pressing national issues and review the progress of government initiatives. According to reports from the Ghana News Agency, the upcoming session is expected to handle a significant volume of government business. During this third meeting, Members of Parliament will deliberate on various legislative proposals, consider committee reports, and address essential budget-related matters. While specific agenda items for the first few days are yet to be fully publicized, the Speaker's office is anticipated to release an official order paper soon. This document will detail the priority bills and motions that will dominate the floor during the initial sittings. The recall comes in the wake of a recent emergency session where the House was summoned to discuss urgent business, including a motion regarding drug seizures tied to Ghana. Although Speaker Bagbin ultimately ruled that specific motion inadmissible, the recall underscored the legislative body's role in addressing matters of national concern. As the House prepares to sit again on November 3, the focus will likely return to clearing the legislative backlog and ensuring robust oversight of executive activities as the Ninth Parliament continues its second session.
