The Central North Regional Police Command has successfully dismantled a kidnapping and extortion syndicate, rescuing 30-year-old Bismarck Amo and arresting four primary suspects. The operation, titled "Operation Rescue the Victim and Arrest the Perpetrators," was led by DCOP Abraham Acquaye and involved multiple police units following reports of Mr. Amo's abduction in early September 2026. On September 14, the Assin Fosu District Court remanded the four individuals into custody for eight days as investigations continue into a case that has shocked the local community.
According to police reports, Mr. Amo was lured from Assin Fosu to Kumasi on September 6, 2026, under false pretenses. Once he arrived, he was held hostage and subjected to severe physical torture. The kidnappers initially demanded a ransom of GH¢45,000 for his release. Despite his family paying GH¢19,500, the captors continued to demand an additional GH¢30,500 while escalating the abuse. The police eventually tracked the syndicate to their hideout in the Ashanti Region on September 11, where they rescued the victim. Mr. Amo was found with significant injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment under police protection.
The investigation has taken a complex turn following claims that the kidnapping was triggered by a prior financial dispute. One of the suspects, Mavis Badu Acheampong, a teacher, allegedly orchestrated the plot after claiming that Mr. Amo had defrauded her of GH¢44,800 through a mobile money and bank fraud scheme. Police believe the suspects, including another teacher and a security guard, conspired to recover the lost funds by force rather than through legal channels. However, the authorities have emphasized that these fraud allegations do not justify the violent methods used by the syndicate.
The four suspects currently in custody—identified as Mavis Badu Acheampong, Charles Doku, Oteng Baffour, and Kenneth Opoku Kwarteng—face six charges including conspiracy and kidnapping. They are scheduled to reappear in court on September 22, 2026. Meanwhile, authorities are aggressively pursuing several accomplices who remain at large, including a military officer reportedly involved in the scheme. The Police Command has reiterated its commitment to dismantling organized crime and cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands.
