The Asokwa Municipal Assembly has disbursed substantial financial and material aid to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) to stimulate local economic growth, while GCB Bank PLC has simultaneously intensified fire safety measures across major markets in Accra. These twin initiatives, spanning the Ashanti and Greater Accra regions, underscore a coordinated effort between government and corporate entities to foster economic inclusion and protect the livelihoods of small-scale entrepreneurs and traders. By targeting both social vulnerability and commercial safety, these programs aim to build a more resilient local economy.
In Asokwa, Municipal Chief Executive Amoh Kamel led the distribution of equipment and financial assistance totaling GH₵262,712.00 to 47 beneficiaries. During the ceremony, Mr. Kamel emphasized that the government’s support is strategically designed to transition PWDs from dependency to active participation in income-generating activities. Gifty Afi Wetsi, Chairperson of the Disability Fund Management Committee, echoed these sentiments, urging the beneficiaries to strive for independence. To ensure the long-term success of the initiative, the Municipal Director of Social Welfare, Dickson Frimpong, confirmed that his department would maintain strict oversight to ensure the tools and funds are utilized effectively for their intended economic purposes.
Concurrently, in the nation’s capital, GCB Bank PLC collaborated with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to provide critical fire prevention and emergency response training for traders in Circle, Okaishie, and Kantamanto. This intervention forms part of GCB’s 2026 Staff Community Impact Programme (SCIP), an ambitious project aiming to reach one million Ghanaians through 95 distinct community projects. Beyond training, the bank distributed fire extinguishers and facilitated the appointment of 20 "Market Fire Safety Champions" tasked with maintaining safety awareness within these high-risk commercial hubs, which have been frequently affected by devastating market fires.
The GNFS has praised the partnership, noting that the proactive preparedness of traders is vital in mitigating fire risks and protecting national assets. By combining financial empowerment for vulnerable groups in the Ashanti Region with disaster management in Accra’s commercial centers, these programs highlight a multifaceted approach to community resilience. As these initiatives move forward, the emphasis remains on sustainability—through both social welfare monitoring and the institutionalization of community-led safety protocols—to ensure a lasting positive impact on the economic health of the nation.
