Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced he will not seek re-election, marking the conclusion of a 21-year tenure at the party's headquarters. Having served as the party's longest-running General Secretary before assuming the chairmanship, Nketiah's decision represents a major transition for the party. The announcement coincides with the closing of nominations for national executive positions ahead of a national congress scheduled for December 2026.
The internal election process has drawn 137 aspirants for various executive roles, with five candidates vying specifically for the national chairmanship. The party has established a filing fee of GH₵100,000 for the chairman position, the highest fee among the contested roles, though the fee structure includes specific provisions for female candidates and persons with disabilities. The transition comes as the party moves into the vetting and appeals stages of its electoral calendar to determine the final list of candidates.
Following the announcement, former Deputy General Secretary Koku Anyidoho publicly addressed his long-standing political rivalry with Nketiah, offering forgiveness for past conflicts. Their relationship had been marked by tension since Anyidoho contested Nketiah for the General Secretary role in 2005. Despite these past divisions, Anyidoho acknowledged Nketiah's significant contributions to the NDC and his impact on the party's history. Meanwhile, Nketiah's departure from the chairmanship has sparked speculation regarding a potential future run for the party's flagbearership as he prepares for a new phase in his political career.
