The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has officially declined to seek re-election for his position. His decision was confirmed following the closure of nominations for national executive roles on October 21, 2026, when it was revealed he did not pick up forms to defend his seat. Having led the party since December 2022, his exit from the administrative leadership has sparked intense speculation regarding a potential bid for the NDC flagbearer primary ahead of the 2028 general elections.
With the chairmanship now vacant, five aspirants have emerged to compete for the party's top executive post. The contenders include former National Chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, who is seeking a return to the office he lost to Nketiah in 2022. Other notable candidates in the race are Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, Nii Armah Ashietey, Sofo Azorkar, and Akwasi Opong-Fosu. These five are part of a larger pool of 137 aspirants who have picked up nomination forms for various national executive positions, including the incumbent General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, who is seeking re-election.
The NDC has established a clear roadmap for the leadership transition leading up to the National Delegates Congress on December 19, 2026. Aspirants are expected to file their completed nomination forms between November 7 and November 9, with a vetting process scheduled for November 12–13, 2026. The upcoming congress will be a critical juncture for the party as it reorganizes its leadership structure for the next election cycle.
Asiedu Nketiah, a veteran politician known as "General Mosquito," served as the party's General Secretary for 17 years before becoming Chairman. While he has yet to formally announce a presidential campaign or state his reasons for not seeking re-election, political observers view his withdrawal from the chairmanship as a strategic move to focus on a possible 2027 presidential primary. His departure marks the end of a brief but influential term as chairman, leaving the party to choose between several experienced figures to guide its path forward.
