The Ashanti Regional Police Command has apprehended six individuals suspected of belonging to an organized armed robbery syndicate responsible for a series of street robberies across the Kumasi metropolis. The operations, which took place throughout August 2026, were spearheaded by the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit with specialized support from the Inspector General of Police’s (IGP) special operations team. This crackdown follows a surge in criminal activities in the region, specifically targeting residents in high-traffic areas such as Kaase and Kwadaso Estates.
Among those taken into custody are Philip Nyarko, 23; Hadi Samed, 20; and Foster Owusu Afriyie, 45. Additionally, the police arrested Augustine Agyemang Duah, who is suspected of acting as the syndicate's technician by unlocking and reconfiguring stolen mobile devices for resale. During the raids, law enforcement officers recovered a motorcycle used to facilitate the robberies, several weapons, and a cache of mobile phones believed to belong to various victims. DCOP Arthur Osei Akoto, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, confirmed that the suspects are linked to numerous street-level muggings and coordinated attacks that have recently plagued the region.
A concerning aspect of the investigation revealed that three of the suspects had been previously arrested for similar robbery charges in December 2025. Despite these prior legal encounters, they were granted bail and allegedly resumed their criminal activities shortly thereafter. The Ashanti Regional Police Command is currently pursuing six additional suspects believed to be integral members of the same syndicate who remain at large. DCOP Akoto emphasized the police's unwavering commitment to ensuring public safety and warned that the command is intensifying its surveillance of known criminal hotspots.
As investigations continue to uncover the full extent of the syndicate's operations, the police have urged the public to come forward with any information that could lead to the arrest of the remaining fugitives. The successful apprehension of these six individuals is viewed as a significant step in restoring security to the Ashanti Region, though authorities remain on high alert. The suspects are currently being processed for court, where they will face charges related to armed robbery and possession of stolen property.
