Dr. Ama Antwiwaa Adu-Appiah, a Medical Officer at the Paga Hospital in the Upper East Region, has earned widespread acclaim for donating a GH¢20,000 cash reward to her facility to procure essential medical supplies. The reward was originally presented to her by the Paga Youth Movement (PAYOM) as a token of appreciation for her decision to accept a posting to the district, a region that often struggles to attract and retain medical professionals. Rather than utilizing the funds for personal use, Dr. Adu-Appiah opted to reinvest the entire amount into the hospital's infrastructure to enhance healthcare delivery for the local community.
The donation has facilitated the procurement of critical diagnostic and treatment tools, including nebulisers, blood pressure monitors, and a fetal Doppler machine. During the presentation of the equipment, Dr. Adu-Appiah expressed her gratitude to PAYOM for the recognition and emphasized her commitment to improving patient outcomes. She noted that the gesture was also intended to support her colleagues, highlighting that teamwork and adequate resources are vital for providing quality health services in resource-constrained environments.
Receiving the items on behalf of the hospital, Nurse Manager Zita Abdulaih commended the doctor’s selflessness and her focus on the welfare of patients. Abdulaih assured that the hospital management would ensure the equipment is properly maintained to serve the community effectively for years to come. The presentation ceremony, attended by hospital staff and representatives of PAYOM, underscored the importance of community-led initiatives in supporting the healthcare sector and motivating frontline workers.
This initiative highlights a growing trend of local partnerships aimed at addressing the healthcare gap in rural Ghana. In addition to the initial reward, PAYOM has pledged a further GH¢10,000 for hospital improvements, signaling a long-term commitment to the facility. Such collaborative efforts are seen as a vital strategy for overcoming the challenges of medical staffing in the Upper East Region, ensuring that residents have access to reliable and well-equipped medical services.
