The Ministry of Health has officially launched a comprehensive three-day mid-year review in Ho, aimed at evaluating the implementation of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 Manifesto health sector commitments. Under the leadership of the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the review began on August 15, 2026, bringing together key stakeholders including agency heads, board chairpersons, and Ministry directors. This high-level assessment serves as a critical checkpoint for President John Mahama’s administration to measure progress and address bottlenecks within the nation’s evolving healthcare landscape.
At the forefront of the discussions are several flagship initiatives designed to move Ghana closer to Universal Health Coverage. These include the Free Primary Healthcare program and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as "MahamaCare." The review is scrutinizing the rollout of these programs alongside the expansion of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). Minister Akandoh emphasized that the evaluation is not merely a formality but a strategic effort to identify implementation gaps, particularly in infrastructure development and the recruitment of essential health professionals across various regions.
A significant component of the three-day summit involves enhancing administrative efficiency and fiscal responsibility. Participants are undergoing specialized training in Public Financial Management (PFM) to ensure that health sector resources are utilized effectively and transparently. By aligning health spending with the Public Financial Management Act, the Ministry aims to bolster accountability and ensure that every cedi allocated to the sector directly contributes to improved patient outcomes and service delivery.
The Ho review is expected to conclude with a roadmap for the remainder of the fiscal year, outlining specific strategies to overcome current challenges. As the Mahama administration seeks to fulfill its promises of a more accessible and affordable healthcare system, the Ministry of Health remains focused on bridging the gap between policy and practice. These deliberations are pivotal in ensuring that the government's vision for a robust, resilient health sector becomes a tangible reality for all Ghanaians.
