Airbnb has introduced updated guidelines for hosts, effectively banning them from requiring guests to perform significant cleaning tasks such as washing dishes or stripping bed linens. These changes, which apply to reservations made after November 20, are designed to address growing traveler frustration over burdensome house rules. By standardizing what hosts can demand, the company aims to ensure that guests who already pay cleaning fees are not subjected to unreasonable labor before checking out of their accommodations.
Under the new policy, Airbnb hosts are permitted to set up to seven standard house rules and may include additional reasonable requests. However, tasks that are traditionally the responsibility of professional cleaning services are now explicitly prohibited. The platform will now display these house rules more prominently to travelers during the booking process, ensuring transparency and preventing surprises upon arrival. Any rules or requests deemed unreasonable by the company will be flagged for review to maintain platform standards.
The move comes after a series of viral social media posts, particularly on TikTok, where guests shared stories of exhaustive checkout lists provided by hosts. Some of these lists included demands for guests to vacuum floors, clean windows, and launder towels despite the inclusion of a separate cleaning fee in the total booking cost. This trend sparked a broader public debate about the value of staying in an Airbnb compared to traditional hotels, where such chores are not expected of patrons.
Airbnb emphasized that while hosts still maintain significant control over their properties, all house rules must strictly align with the company's overarching policies. Moving forward, the platform will also limit the use of separate contracts between hosts and guests, permitting them only under specific, pre-authorized circumstances. These updates represent a significant shift in the company’s efforts to balance the autonomy of hosts with a consistent, high-quality experience for global travelers.
