Achimota School is set to receive a significant boost to its infrastructure following the sod-cutting ceremony for a new GH¢18,702,819.08 boys' boarding house. The project is fully financed by Ebenezer Saka Addo-Mensah, the Managing Director of Saka Homes and a proud alumnus of the institution. Launched on August 6, the initiative is designed to provide a 250-bed capacity facility, addressing the acute accommodation pressures resulting from rising student enrollment at the prestigious school.
The new facility will incorporate modern architectural designs, featuring spacious dormitories, recreational areas, and environmentally sustainable elements. According to the school's leadership, including the Headmaster and the Board Chairman, this expansion is critical for maintaining a healthy gender balance and ensuring that students have a conducive environment to develop as future leaders. Mr. Addo-Mensah expressed his commitment to giving back to his alma mater, noting that the project is a contribution toward preserving the school’s excellence for future generations.
This project is a flagship implementation under the Ghana Education Trust Fund’s (GETFund) Education Financing and Partnership Initiative (EFPI). GETFund Administrator Paul Adjei emphasized during the ceremony that sustainable educational development is best achieved through such high-level collaborations between the state and the private sector. He noted that the EFPI is specifically designed to attract resources from alumni and corporate entities to modernize teaching and living facilities nationwide. Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu also spoke at the event, reiterating the government’s commitment to increasing educational investment and supporting infrastructure expansion.
The collaboration between Saka Homes and GETFund serves as a strategic model for addressing the infrastructure deficit in Ghana’s second-cycle institutions. By integrating private capital into the development of public school facilities, the initiative aims to create safe and modern learning environments that can keep pace with the country's growing educational needs. This milestone at Achimota School is expected to inspire other alumni groups and private developers to partner with the government in fostering long-term educational progress.
