The Kotobabi District Police Command has successfully apprehended two suspected street robbers, identified as Stephen Gletsu, 37, and Mohammed Sheriff, 20, following a dramatic pursuit in the Dzorwulu area of Accra on January 14, 2026. The arrest, which was part of an intelligence-led patrol operation, marks a significant breakthrough in the regional police force's ongoing efforts to curb the rising incidence of street crime and robberies targeting residents and commuters within the capital. According to reports from the Accra Regional Police, the operation began when officers on a routine patrol spotted the duo exhibiting suspicious behavior while riding an unregistered black motorbike. Clad in all-black attire, the suspects immediately attempted to evade the police upon detection, sparking a high-speed chase through the streets of Dzorwulu. The pursuit, which saw officers fire warning shots to deter the suspects, eventually concluded near the Nigerian High Commission in Roman Ridge after the suspects lost control of their motorcycle and fell. A thorough search conducted at the scene led to the retrieval of several exhibits, including multiple stolen smartphones, a necklace, and cash amounts totaling GH¢2,690.00 and USD2. Superintendent Juliana Obeng confirmed that during preliminary interrogations, both Gletsu and Sheriff admitted to committing a series of robberies across various neighborhoods in Accra. Their confessions have already linked them to several previously reported victim statements, providing crucial evidence for the ongoing investigation and potential prosecution. Following their capture, the suspects were transported to the Police Hospital for medical attention to treat injuries sustained during the fall from their motorbike. The Accra Regional Police Command has used this incident to reaffirm its unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order, assuring the public that patrols will be intensified to ensure the safety of all citizens. Authorities are also urging victims of recent street robberies to come forward to assist in the identification of the recovered items as the legal process against the suspects proceeds.
