Ten Cattle Electrocuted in Abrewanko as Fallen High-Tension Cable Sparks Safety Fears

A farming community in Abrewanko, located within the Krachi East Municipality of the Oti Region, is mourning the loss of approximately 10 cattle following a tragic electrocution incident. The animals were killed after coming into contact with a stream that had been electrified by a fallen high-tension electricity cable. This hazard has created a state of emergency in the area, as the live wire continues to pose a lethal threat to both livestock and the local population.

According to Mr. Ericson Adonteng Boateng, the Assembly Member for Katanga East, the high-tension cable collapsed three days prior to the deaths of the cattle. The livestock, unaware of the hidden danger, were shocked instantly while attempting to drink from the water source. The incident has caused significant distress among local farmers who rely on their herds for economic stability, highlighting the devastating impact of infrastructure failure on rural livelihoods.

In response to the crisis, Mr. Boateng has issued an urgent appeal to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to intervene immediately. He stressed the necessity of disconnecting the power supply to the affected line and securing the area to prevent further tragedies. "The situation poses a grave danger to residents, especially children and farmers who frequently use the paths near the stream," Boateng warned, noting that human casualties are a high possibility if the live cable is not addressed promptly.

As the community waits for the ECG to conduct repairs, residents have been strictly advised to stay away from the affected stream and surrounding fields. The event has raised broader concerns regarding the maintenance of power infrastructure in the Oti Region and the response time of utility providers to reports of fallen lines. For now, the people of Abrewanko remain on high alert, hoping for a swift resolution before any more lives—animal or human—are lost.
