Abraham Newton Awundok, a 32-year-old security guard, has been remanded into custody by the Adabraka District Court for the alleged murder of his employers, 80-year-old Dr. Jesse Amuah and 64-year-old Elizabeth Esi Amuah. The tragic incident occurred on March 23, 2026, at the couple’s residence in Asylum Down, Accra, following a dispute over a GH¢1,500 payment. The victims' bodies were discovered concealed in a septic tank on the property, ending a search for the elderly couple that had gripped the local community.
According to court proceedings, the fatal confrontation began when Awundok and the couple argued over payment for household chores. The prosecution revealed that Awundok became increasingly agitated following verbal insults from Mrs. Amuah during the disagreement. This tension reportedly escalated into a violent attack, resulting in the deaths of both the medical doctor and his wife. In an attempt to evade detection, the suspect allegedly hid the bodies in a septic tank before fleeing the country shortly after the crime was committed.
Awundok's flight from justice took him to Dubai, but his escape was short-lived. Following investigations and international coordination, he was apprehended and deported back to Ghana in August 2026 to face the legal consequences of his actions. Now facing two counts of murder, the suspect was brought before the court where the details of his capture and the nature of the dispute were formally presented. The case has drawn significant public attention due to the professional standing of Dr. Amuah and the brutal nature of the alleged crime.
The presiding judge at the Adabraka District Court has ordered that Awundok remain in custody as the legal process unfolds. The case has been adjourned until September 21, 2026, for further hearing. This incident has sparked broader discussions regarding the security and vetting of domestic staff in Ghana, as well as the vulnerability of elderly citizens. The public and the medical community continue to follow the proceedings closely, seeking justice for the Amuah family.
