The Eastern Regional qualifiers for the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) reached a dramatic conclusion as Abomosu STEM Senior High School clinched the final regional slot in a nail-biting tie-breaker. Joining them in the upcoming National Championship are Yilo Krobo SHS and Oyoko Methodist SHS, both of whom delivered standout performances to secure their places. These schools will represent the Eastern Region on the national stage, joining twelve other institutions that had already successfully navigated the regional qualification rounds.
The most intense showdown of the qualifiers featured Abomosu STEM SHS against Ghana Senior High School (GHANASS), Koforidua. Abomosu established a commanding early lead, entering the third round with 43 points against GHANASS’s 34 and Mamfe Methodist Girls’ SHS’s 29. However, a spirited final-round rally by GHANASS leveled the score at 43 points, necessitating a high-stakes tie-breaker. Abomosu STEM SHS ultimately triumphed in the sudden-death round, securing the final ticket and leaving GHANASS with a heartbreaking exit. Mamfe Methodist Girls’ SHS finished the contest with 32 points.
In earlier contests, Yilo Krobo Senior High School demonstrated exceptional resilience to book their national spot. Despite trailing Presby Senior High Technical School, Aburi, at the half-time mark, Yilo Krobo staged a powerful second-half comeback to finish with an impressive 53 points. While Aburi Presby ended with 47 points, their strong performance keeps them in the conversation as a potential top runner-up for the national tournament. Similarly, Oyoko Methodist SHS cemented their qualification by winning Contest 10 with 43 points, outclassing Presby SHTS, Adukrom, and Kwahu Tafo SHS, who finished with 33 and 4 points, respectively.
Beyond the primary qualification battles, the regional event celebrated academic excellence through side competitions such as the GOIL Riddle Bonanza, which was claimed by St. Paul’s SHS, Asakraka, despite their exit from the main bracket. With the regional lineup now finalized, the qualified schools must pivot to intensive preparations for the 2026 National Championship. The mix of specialized STEM institutions and established academic powerhouses from the Eastern Region suggests a formidable challenge for their competitors in the national finals.
