The Eastern Regional qualifiers for the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) have concluded with several schools securing their places in the National Championship after series of intense academic battles. Among the standout performers were Abomosu STEM Senior High School, Oyoko Methodist SHS, and Yilo Krobo SHS, all of whom navigated high-pressure contests to ensure their regional representation. These victories mark a significant milestone for the qualifying institutions as they join the elite group of schools preparing to compete on the national stage.
Abomosu STEM SHS clinched the final qualification spot for the region in a high-stakes encounter against Ghana Senior High School (GHANASS), Koforidua. Abomosu held a steady lead through the third round with 43 points to GHANASS’s 34, but a late-game surge by the Koforidua-based school brought the score to a 43-43 deadlock by the end of the final round. In a nail-biting tie-breaker, Abomosu STEM SHS correctly answered the deciding question to secure their ticket, while Mamfe Methodist Girls’ SHS exited the competition with 32 points after a spirited performance.
In other regional action, Yilo Krobo SHS staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Presby Senior High Technical School, Aburi. Trailing at the halfway mark, Yilo Krobo surged in the latter stages of the contest to finish with an impressive 53 points against Aburi Presby’s 47. Although Aburi Presby SHS lost the automatic slot, their strong score keeps them in contention for a potential place as a top runner-up. Similarly, Oyoko Methodist SHS demonstrated academic prowess by dominating Contest 10, finishing first with 43 points. They outperformed Presby SHTS, Adukrom, and Kwahu Tafo SHS, while St. Paul’s SHS, Asakraka, managed to win the GOIL Riddle Bonanza despite their overall elimination from the tournament.
With these results, the Eastern Region has finalized its primary contingent for the 2026 National Championship. Abomosu STEM SHS joins twelve other previously qualified schools from the region, bolstering the area's reputation for science and mathematics excellence. As the focus shifts toward the national stage, these schools will now undergo intensive preparations to face perennial heavyweights, aiming to bring the prestigious NSMQ trophy to the Eastern Region.
