Four eight-year-old pupils from the School of Islamic Studies in Aboabo, located within the Asokore Mampong Municipality, were killed on Monday when a van crashed into them. The victims, identified as Juraid Mohammed, Anisah Ibrahim, Fati Muniru, and Raiyan Faisal, were preparing to cross the road when they were struck. Three other children sustained injuries in the accident, with two reportedly remaining in critical condition.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver of a Hyundai van lost control of the vehicle while descending a slope, leading to the fatal collision. The children had just finished their classes for the day and were attempting to navigate the road when the vehicle failed. Following the crash, the driver was taken into police custody, and an investigation by motor traffic authorities is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances of the vehicle's failure.
The tragedy has prompted immediate calls for improved safety infrastructure from both school authorities and the local community. The headmaster of the School of Islamic Studies and Aboabo residents are demanding the urgent construction of a pedestrian footbridge to protect students and other pedestrians. They emphasized that the dangerous terrain and the lack of dedicated crossing measures pose a constant threat to life in the area. Local officials are expected to assess the site to consider necessary safety interventions.
