A specialized medical team at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra has achieved a significant surgical success by removing a motorbike key from the skull of a 29-year-old farmer. Moro Razak, a resident of Awoma in the Oti Region, was rushed to the facility after sustaining the life-threatening injury during a violent altercation. The complex procedure has drawn attention to the specialized emergency care provided at the military facility and the harrowing circumstances surrounding the injury.
The incident reportedly occurred on July 21, 2024, when Razak attempted to act as a peacemaker between two youths who were engaged in a fight in Amenyo, a community near his home. During his effort to separate the combatants, Razak was stabbed in the head with the motorbike key, which became deeply embedded in his skull. He was initially treated and stabilized at the Jasikan Municipal Hospital, but medical staff there quickly determined that the severity of the trauma required an urgent referral to Accra for neurological surgery.
Following his transfer, the surgical operation was conducted on July 26. According to reports from the patient's uncle, the procedure was successful, and Razak is currently recovering well under medical supervision. The ability of the surgeons to remove the foreign object from such a critical area without immediate fatal consequences is being praised as a testament to the high level of medical expertise at the 37 Military Hospital.
While Razak focuses on his recovery, the communities of Awoma and Amenyo remain in shock over the extreme violence directed at an individual who was simply trying to maintain order. The Ghana Police Service is currently investigating the circumstances of the fight and the subsequent assault on Razak. This case underscores the vital importance of the national referral system in ensuring that victims of severe trauma in rural areas can access life-saving specialized care.
