The Ghanaian entertainment industry is currently witnessing a series of public disputes that highlight deep-seated issues regarding professional etiquette, gratitude, and industry hierarchy. From the music studios to the movie sets, prominent figures such as musician 2Sure and legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw have voiced significant grievances and defenses regarding the treatment of artists. These developments underscore a growing tension between established stars and emerging talents, as well as the financial risks involved in collaborative projects within the creative arts sector.
Musician 2Sure has been particularly vocal about his frustrations with colleagues Kwame Yogot and Article Wan. During an interview on Accra FM’s 'Akwaaba Drive,' 2Sure detailed his disappointment with rapper Kwame Yogot, claiming he invested significant personal resources to promote Yogot during the rapper's early career. Despite this early boost to his visibility, 2Sure alleges that Yogot has failed to publicly acknowledge his support since achieving mainstream success. 2Sure emphasized that mutual recognition is vital for the industry's growth, noting that artists must remember those who helped them climb the ladder of success.
Adding to 2Sure's grievances is a failed collaboration with Article Wan. The musician accused Article Wan of refusing to participate in a music video for their joint project, despite having already been paid for the recording. According to 2Sure, Article Wan cited the age of the song as a reason for his absence from the shoot, a move 2Sure described as unsupported and professionally damaging. This refusal resulted in financial losses for 2Sure, who argued that an artist can never predict which track might reignite their career, noting that the song in question is still considered a "banger" by fans.
Meanwhile, the movie industry has seen its own share of controversy, with private legal practitioner Maurice Ampaw entering the fray to defend actor LilWin. Addressing an ongoing feud between LilWin and Dr Likee in a TikTok video, Ampaw asserted that LilWin’s contributions to the creative arts and national development place him in a category of his own. He criticized comparisons between the two actors, stating that LilWin’s versatility in both acting and music makes him a superior figure in the industry hierarchy. Ampaw’s defense highlights a broader call for respecting established legacies and the impact of long-term contributions to the Ghanaian cultural landscape.
These collective incidents reflect a broader need for professional integrity and stronger interpersonal relationships within Ghana's entertainment circles. Whether through financial investments in music videos or the preservation of an actor's reputation, the common thread remains a demand for mutual respect. As the industry continues to evolve, these public outcries may serve as a catalyst for more formalised agreements and a culture of appreciation among creative professionals.
