Ghana has recorded a series of significant road accidents over a three-day period in late March 2026, spanning the Eastern, Oti, and Greater Accra Regions. These incidents, ranging from high-impact head-on collisions to heavy-duty vehicle rollovers, have left at least eleven people injured and resulted in substantial property damage. The recurring themes of mechanical failures and dangerous overtaking maneuvers have once again brought national road safety standards into sharp focus as emergency services worked to manage the fallout from these crashes and prevent further casualties.
The most severe of these incidents occurred on March 23 on the Accra–Kumasi Highway near Enyiresi, where a head-on collision left eleven individuals—six males and five females—with various degrees of injury. According to reports from the Ghana National Fire Service, the accident happened near Frimpongso Junction when a Toyota Camry attempted an overtaking maneuver and crashed into an oncoming Toyota Voxy. While bystanders provided initial aid, emergency responders ensured all victims were transported to the Enyiresi Government Hospital. The financial toll of this specific collision is also significant, with vehicle repair and salvage costs estimated to exceed GH₵500,000.
In the Greater Accra Region, a watermelon seller at Sege narrowly escaped a life-threatening situation on March 24 when a truck loaded with alcoholic beverages veered off the Tema-Aflao Highway. The vendor, Madam Irene Tettehwayo, fled into nearby bushes as the vehicle skidded for 20 meters before landing on its side. Preliminary reports suggest the driver lost control due to brake failure while overtaking. Just a day later, in the Oti Region, a diesel truck overturned at Bawa Akora following a steering malfunction. While the three occupants escaped unharmed, the Pai-Katanga Fire Post had to act swiftly to syphon fuel from the overturned truck, successfully preventing a potentially catastrophic fire or explosion.
These frequent occurrences highlight the persistent risks associated with Ghana's major transit corridors and the critical importance of vehicle maintenance. While the prompt response from the Ghana National Fire Service and local bystanders has been credited with preventing loss of life in the truck-related incidents, the collision at Enyiresi serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of risky driving. As authorities investigate these cases, road users are urged to exercise extreme caution and prioritize regular mechanical checks to mitigate the rising tide of highway accidents that continue to threaten lives and livelihoods across the country.
